CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

REX

Rex turned off the car’s engine and looked up at his property. The automatic outside light had sprung on as soon as the electric gate had opened but the house itself was shrouded in darkness. It was a modern, detached, handsome house, with a double garage, wide gravel driveway, and six-foot walls that gave him the privacy he desired. Accessed by a shared private road, it was tucked away in one of the most prestigious areas in Leeds. It was the kind of house that befitted him perfectly.

He imagined Ava inside, squirrelled away in her fucking office no doubt, although the fact that someone with such a menial job even had an office was laughable. Why she persisted with online teaching he couldn’t even fathom. It wasn’t as if she needed the money; she was loaded. And so, by the laws of marriage, was he. He just had to stick it out a little while longer. Except now she had embarrassed him publicly, and his fucking minion Jason of all people had borne witness to it.

As instructed, Jason had returned to Rex’s office after their initial conversation and spilled more beans about Ava’s little Italian adventure. Rex had watched him carefully throughout and deduced that the lad didn’t seem to be lying, nor had a motive for doing so. Rex knew the older sales guys were a bit wary of him after that one night out when things had got a bit out of hand, and he had manipulated that wariness ever since. Nobody would ever dare wind him up for a joke.

Rex picked up his phone from its dock and navigated to Poppy’s most recent picture message. He was met with a close-up of pert, naked breasts and Poppy’s parted, full lips just visible at the top of the photo. His dick instantly hardened. He wanted nothing more than to start the car, wheelspin it out of his driveway, and put his foot down to get to her. The thought of her soft, sweet, supple skin against his mouth was almost too much to resist. But resist he must because he had a problem to deal with. He undid his trousers, pulled down his Calvin Kleins, and snapped a reciprocal treat for Poppy. She knew not to contact him after 7.30pm if he was at home, so he sent his message safe in the knowledge he wouldn’t be interrupted again that night. The impending radio silence added to his already dark mood though. Fucking Ava ruined all his fun. Even his penis had already deflated.

He tidied himself up and finally got out of the car, psyching himself up for what was to come. He remembered snippets of Jason’s surveillance-style observations of Ava and her three supposed friends enjoying their cosy get-together: ‘Couple of tall, dark fellas, one looked a bit foreign…’ ‘Tasty glamour-puss friend…’ ‘Shared pudding with the foreign guy…’ Where the fuck had she managed to find three friends, including some foreigner? he wondered.
